Memorable Days

It’s ten o’clock on a Wednesday night, and I’m listening to mellow music and drinking a glass of wine. I should go to bed early, because I’m tired, but it’s been a busy day, and my mind is too active to sleep.

I sat down tonight to write a letter to a friend, and found myself feeling rusty writing something that’s not about the conference. With two weeks to go until presenters start arriving, it’s taken over every waking moment, and I’ve forgotten how to talk about other things. So I figured I’d better write a blog post and remind myself.

I came across a quote today that got me thinking, about writing and about life. It’s from Dickens, in Great Expectations:

That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But, it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.

So pause you who read this, and think for a moment. What are those days in your life? The ones that changed things forever, one way or another? Would you change them if you could? How would doing so change your life, do you think?

That’s where my thoughts are tonight. Off to sip some wine and think some more, which is possibly a dangerous combination…
